Valproic acid is used as an anti-convulsant for focal seizures as well as generalized seizures. Seizures controlled with this medication include absence seizures, myoclonic seizures, and mixed-type seizures. Side effects can include abdominal pain, weight gain due to increased appetite, loss of hair, and in some rare cases may cause abnormal liver and blood counts.
